Path of Broken Patterns
This project emerged from our longstanding fascination with the nature of photogrammetry, a 3D scanning technique with immense untapped potential. We pursue new modes of expression in the conditions and factors that cause apparent glitches in photogrammetry, allowing us to move beyond the algorithmic limits of current systems through the controlled use of a subject typically discouraged in 3D scanning: the mirror. The power of a mirror to ‘break’ a 3D scanning algorithm reminds us that the word ‘broken’ has a double meaning in Mandarin — not just something that has fallen apart, but also something newly formed. Our work adopts this more supple sense of the word, in which the broken patterns that cause anomalies in 3D scanning also hold the potential to generate novel digital images that challenge the rigidity of algorithms.
